Pompeu Casanovas
About Me
Well, I am doing many things, and my interests are many as well. I am currently Director of Advanced Research at the Law School of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and Director of the Institute of Law and Technology (http://idt.uab.cat). In the past, I carried out research programs at UCSD (USA), Stanford (USA), Bologna (Italy), and other places. I am especially interested in ways of regulation, pragmatics, dialogue, multimedia and law, legal web services, and what I call "relational justice", including ADR, ODR and other tools alternative or complementary to adjudication. I like applications and concrete problems. Therefore, I am currently engaged in the best practices book for the Catalan sector of the Audiovisual, and in the White Catalan Book on Mediation (this is a huge project across many domains: health, education, restorative justice, Chambers of Commerce, consumers, local adminstration...). I try to think technologies as embedded into the social world, especially fitting the people's needs (mostly from the point of view of citizens and of professional people). Therefore, I like an end-user approach to legal ontologies, architectures and the Semantic Web.
I have many books and research publications. Most of them are academic, in the legal field (Law & Society, AI & Law, legal philosophy). However, others are more personal. E.g. I just get started editing the Journal of Catalan Intellectual History (http://catalanphilosophy.cat), because if you go to the archives you discover another non-official history of your own people, hidden under the Francoist era.
I do believe in coordinated efforts and collaborative work. With the IDT and the AIII-CSIC people (Marta Poblet, Núria Casellas, Pep Vallbé, Pablo Noriega, Emma Teodoro, Núria Galera, Sílvia Gabarró... ) we launched the (free) IDT-Series on AI & Law (http://www.huygens.es/site/service4.html). I just signed a contract to edit the Law, Technology and Governance (LGT) Series, at Springer (with Giovanni Sartor). In the same way, I am working with Chiara and Enrico Francesconi at the European Publishing Academic Press (Florence). In Spain, I am conducting La Razón Áurea (The Golden Reason), a scientific series at the Editorial Comares. We have translated into Spanish The Sciences of the Artificial (by Herbert A. Simon) and The Semantic Web Primer (by Grigoris Antoniou and Frank van Harmelen). Next, it will follow a volume by Cristiano Castelfranchi.
